It’s always fun to see big bucks fighting and getting after it, but when it happens in summer while their antlers are still in velvet it can be a bit confusing.

This buck fight captured by Whitetail Properties shows how bucks spar in summer while still in velvet. This seems a bit more than sparring because they’re really going after it. The soft velvet can be damaged and if the antlers are still growing, it could create something unique like a dent, hole or broken tine. Maybe this buck fight happened just before they started to slough off the velvet, though.

Deer & Deer Hunting Editor-in-Chief Dan Schmidt lends some insight in this Whitetail Wisdom post provided by researcher John Ozoga about why bucks spar while they’re still in velvet.

If a male is to achieve a social rank before the breeding season, he must interact with other males of any size. A sparring match often begins when one buck approaches another, lowers its head and presents its antlers. During early autumn, soon after velvet shedding, the second buck usually accepts the invitation to spar. In skill sparring, a buck gains knowledge of his antlers’ size and configuration relative to that of other bucks.

If you’re a bowhunter and ever have wondered whether a shot was a good hit or a miss, then you’re likely not using lighted nocks to help you see what’s going on.

Before you get down from your stand and find your arrow to check for blood, a lighted nock can give you a great visual indication of a hit. Compound bows are so fast that while we may see an arrow punch the ribcage without lighted nocks, they’re definitely a benefit for assurance that you made a good shot.

Most states have approved the use of lighted nocks and a few have not. That’s a shame, because a lighted nock doesn’t give you any advantage when you’re scouting deer, hunting deer or shooting your bow. None.

All a lighted nock does is provide you with an assurance of if and where you hit the deer. If you heard the deer fall then cool, you can go find it. Or the lighted nock gives you a starting point for the blood trail and whether to go or wait. Either way, lighted nocks help deer hunters do one of the most important part of hunting — making the effort to bloodtrail and retrieve our game.

Learning how to measure deer antlers is a great way to enjoy your hunting experiences more and also help friends who may have big bucks they want scored.

Antlers will abound throughout the Palmetto State as the search for new state record deer antlers gets underway during the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ annual series of measuring sessions.

Each year during March, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) measures deer antlers throughout the state, with a major effort during the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic scheduled for March 27-29 at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia. A total of 6,389 sets of white-tailed deer antlers, including 6,147 typical racks and 242 nontypical, are currently ranked on South Carolina’s all-time antler records list, according to Charles Ruth, Deer and Wild Turkey Project supervisor for DNR. Minimum scores for state record listing are 125 points for typical antlers and 145 points for nontypical antlers. Measurements are based on the Boone and Crockett system.

The objectives of the state records list are to recognize outstanding animals and to identify areas that produce quality deer, according to Ruth. This information allows biologists to take a closer look at habitat and deer herd conditions in order to make future management recommendations.

Although record deer have been recorded from all counties, Aiken, Anderson, and Orangeburg counties have produced the greatest numbers in the past three to four years. Generally, larger deer are more abundant in areas that have fewer deer, as compared to parts of the state with high deer numbers, according to Ruth. Last year’s measuring sessions produced 222 new entries into the South Carolina records list, the third highest number of entries in the last 10 years.

Hunters must provide necessary documentation, such as the date and county of the kill, and sign a “fair chase” statement when they bring in a set of antlers for measuring. Antlers in velvet or those that are broken and repaired or antlers separated from the skull plate cannot be officially measured for the state records list. If the lower jawbone of the animal was extracted during taxidermy or otherwise saved, it should be brought to the scoring session so biologists can determine the deer’s age. An accurate weight measurement at the time of the kill is also helpful.
