All About Deer Hunting : The intelligent hunters #1 story started here.

All About Deer Hunting begins here.

This blog is all about deer hunting. Here we will talk about all sorts of deer hunting ways, tools, how to, comic fun and other things. I have been deer hinting all my life. I remember as a small child hearing the hunting stories my dad would tell. He hunted with my grandfather in the Adirondacks of NYS. As a boy I was taken by the stories of men in deer camp. Those stories later got me to ask and then beg my dad to take me out dee hunting. I had already gotten my .22 Winchester a few years before and was proficient at taking woodchucks and squirrels.

OOPS, she figured me out…

When dad finally did take me out de hunting in our woods, I was so excited. It was n a shotgun only area of NYS. Dad got out his only shotgun; a 12 gage pump in Mod 12 Winchester, he used use for trap shooting. The slugs were Remington sluggers.. a foster style called rifled slugs. There was no way THOSE things were rifled or even exhibited any twist down the smooth bore of this 12 gage. With the bead sight at the end of a 28 inch barrel, those slugs were just a chance of lead flung out toward a deer.

learning all about deer hunting this morning

All about deer hunting the adventure continued.

So the hunt was on. We hiked up a ridge where we knew the deer bedded. The morning got bright enough to see a little. Setting side by side, me a little behind dad. The dawn came brighter to see through the woods. The sound of acorns dropping around us as we snuggled agains a big tree trunk on the ground. The minuets seemed to go by so slowly. Squirrels chattered high in the oak trees and the air was brisk that November morning.

Suddenly, snap, snap, I could hear movement. Then around a rock came the head of a deer… a small 4 point buck with 2 doe’s. I was all about deer hinting at this point. The deer stepped closer and closer. I saw my dad pick up the shotgun. He pointed toward the deer. Boom, a blast from the gun and wack. The dead branch dropped in front of the deer. The deer scattered, unsure of what just happened. I know what happened, DAD missed. The all American past time, deer hunting, was not working out as I thought.

Dad pumped another shell into the chamber. The deer slowly crept back towards us. Dad shouldered the blunder bust again. This time I could tell he was taking more time and aiming better. Bang and Bang again. The deer stood there dumb founded. I thought for a moment that the deer were looking at each other, asking what was that noise? Are you hurt asked the deer to each other.

All about deer hunting almost ended

Well, that did it. Dad was done hunting for that day. He told me that we better find a better weapon to hunt deer with. That began my adventures into learning all about deer hunting. I, at that time, made my decision to learn as much as I could about the how when and ways of hunting the white-tailed deer. Seeing we lived in a shotgun area only, my efforts leaned towards these pursuits. I knew my dad was frustrated. I was determined to help him find out tools and tactics to have him regain the joys of deer hunting.

The following year I spent time reading all the hunting magazines I could get my hands on. The internet was not around yet, so it was the written word, conversations with skilled hunters I could find and my own trial and error. My fathers business partner became a great source of information. Although the smooth bore shotgun was still the only weapon, I went about finding how to make it shoot more accurate.

I had made some money during the winter shoveling snow in the area for the few neighbors around and mowing some lawns. This had me able to invest in a Remington Mod. 1100 with a trap stock and I bought a deer barrel that called a slug barrel with open sights.

Wow, this was 300% better than that shotgun dad and I starting this deer hinting with. I was still stuck with the lead foster slugs though. So, if I kept the distance down to under 60 yards, it seemed to keep the slugs in a 3 inch group. That was not great, yet it was so much better than the old mod. 12 trap gun of dad’s. The hunt was on in a month or so and I felt ready.
